About Deborah | Expat, Lifestyle Coach

Hi, I’m Deborah, an American expat living and working in Taiwan since 2011. I started the 101 Colored Doors site with the idea that life is a colorful adventure, and you have so many options to choose from. You only need to have the courage to open the door and step through to whatever awaits on the other side.

On 101 Colored Doors, I share my adventures in traveling and experiences living overseas as an expat. I give advice, tips, motivation and encouragement to give you the courage to really live the life you want to live, to travel more, and to maybe even try out the expat lifestyle.

One of the things I love about living in Taiwan is riding my scooter up into the mountains and stopping for views like this.

My Expat Story

On January 18, 2011, I woke up feeling like I wanted a change. Immediately, I started researching expat life and what it would take to live and work overseas. Then, I made all the preparations for my big move. I sold my car, furniture, extra clothes, and other belongings. I boxed up the very few things I wanted to keep and stored them in my mother’s garage, then I packed two suitcases and a carry-on containing everything I would take with me to Taiwan.

On June 18, 2011, exactly six months later, to the day, I stepped off a plane in Taipei, Taiwan. I was ready to begin my new life as an expat. I didn’t know anyone and had no idea what to expect. All I knew was that I was ready for this new adventure, and to this day, I have never looked back.

Creating The Life I Want to Live

Freedom has always been one of the things I value most, and with that, I have always had the need for autonomy, independence, and variety. Moving to Taiwan and starting over from nothing but the contents of two suitcases was the best decision I ever made in my life. My only regret was that I didn’t think to do it sooner.

Over the past several years, I have worked and built and grown, and although I definitely can’t proclaim that “I have arrived,” I will certainly say that I am very happy with the life I have created. I have time, I have money, I have lots of freedom to travel and say yes to different experiences, I am my own boss, and most importantly, this is the life I dreamed of living.

I still have a long way to go, but I’m enjoying the journey. 101 Colored Doors is the next part of this journey, to share my experiences, good and bad, successes and failures, openly and honestly with you. I want to give you motivation and encouragement that it really isn’t *that* hard to build the life that you really want, and that with a little focus, anyone can do it.

Of course, it does take work, but just keep in mind that every success is made one tiny, sometimes imperceptible, step at a time. All you have to do is keep facing forward and put one foot in front of the other. This is the journey, the adventure, and I’m here to help, guide and encourage as much as I can. Are you ready to start living? Let’s have some fun!

It’s Never Too Late to Change Your Life

On a final note, I believe that life is an adventure and the options are limitless. We’re the ones who hold ourselves back from really living the lives we want to live. However, the good news is that young or old, it is never too late to get the courage to open and step through one more new door. Scary but exhilarating, that’s really living life. Let’s do this!
