When you think about your life, do you feel like you are the master of your own destiny, or do you believe that you are following some pre-ordained plan? Do you spend more time thinking about how to find yourself, or do you spend time exploring new ways to create yourself?
Active vs. Passive Living
These are two very different perspectives with opposite approaches. In order to find yourself, it takes a lot of introspection and deep self-exploration. This is great, because it’s important to know yourself and be solid in who you are. However, if you believe you need to find yourself, then you are putting the focus on influences outside of yourself. This is a passive approach that says there is only one way and you must find it.
Conversely, the active approach is what, while you’re exploring and learning about yourself, you can use to mold and shape yourself into the person you want to be. This is the path of growing, molding, learning and adapting. You can try things on to see how they fit, and there’s freedom to make mistakes as you go, because there isn’t just one right path.
Get in the Driver’s Seat
When you endeavor to create yourself instead of merely find yourself, you move yourself from being a passenger to being the driver. You take an active, responsible role in your life, and you are accountable for the outcome. Life becomes an adventure of discovery and trial, and you are free to choose any path you like.
If you simply try to find yourself, you give away your power and spend time worrying if you are on the “right” path and how to “get back on track” if you feel you have lost your way. There is fear and pressure around avoiding mistakes and trying to figure out what the right answer is for your life.
Which seat are you sitting in? Are you the driver of your life, exploring, steering and choosing your path, or are you a passenger, along for the ride, hoping you are going the right direction?
Ponder these two ways of living life, and really ask yourself which one you are. When you visualize each way of living, how does it feel? Which one makes you feel more excited and eager to move forward? Do you feel like your life is better spent doing things to find yourself or to create yourself?
“I am in the driver’s seat of my life, and I have the freedom and power to create the life I want.”
Please share your perspective. Do you live life to find yourself, or do you endeavor to create yourself? What things to do you do for either approach? Let’s all help each other on our journeys by motivating and supporting each other.
Keep having the courage to walk through those doors, and have an awesome day!
